For a lot of people, self-love is an overrated theory and hence they often ignore it. In today’s world, where social media only shows the “positives” of everyone’s life, no one can afford to be imperfect. However, that is never the reality. 

No one is perfect, we are all here on this journey to learn, grow and operate from our heart. This is why it is crucial to fill yourself up with love then you can give from your overflow.  Taking time out for yourself or giving yourself something you deserve doesn’t mean you’re selfish. Self-love is the essence of taking care of yourself. It contributes to your mental well-being. 

What is self-love?

It is a state of appreciation for yourself that grows from physical, psychological, and spiritual aspects. It means having a high regard for your health and happiness. It means taking care of yourself and your needs instead of caring about what others expect of you. It means not settling for anything less than what you deserve. 

Every person might have a different definition of self-love. So, whatever it is for you, make sure you practice it. 

What does self-love mean for you?

In order to practice self-love, you must first know what it is for you. As mentioned above, everyone considers different things when they think of self-love. So what do you think of it? Here are some examples to get you started:

  • Prioritizing yourself
  • Trusting yourself and the decisions you make 
  • Being true to yourself
  • Forgiving yourself
  • Eating healthy
  • Talking to yourself or about yourself nicely
  • Listening to your body
  • Setting healthy boundaries

In short, self-love is about accepting yourself as you are right now. You accept your emotions and put your mental and physical health first. 

How to practice self-love?

There are many different ways of practicing self-love based on what you think of it. Here are some of the most common ones:

  • Being mindful and taking your time to acknowledge your feelings and thoughts. 
  • Taking care of yourself and your basic needs. Exercising, sleeping on time, healthy diet, and much more. 
  • Moving away from perfectionism. Giving yourself the ability to make mistakes and not getting stuck on them.
  • Doing yoga to cultivate your inner voice.
  • Finding a therapist or counselor to talk to
  • Writing down how you feel and what you think. This gives you the ability to better connect to yourself and understand your feelings. 


Life is a journey, and it will end one day. So, learn to go with the flow without getting lost trying to chase temporary things. Avoid trying to please people because nothing in this life is forever. You are here to evolve as a spiritual being.  

So, be kind to yourself. Love yourself just as you’d love someone close to you. You’re here because you matter. And make you a priority, take care of yourself regardless of what others say, do, or think.
