What is Ortho-Bionomy and how can it help with chronic stress and pain?
Ortho-Bionomy® is a gentle, non-invasive, osteopathically- based form of body therapy. It is extremely effective when working with chronic stress and pain. Or problems associated with postural and structural imbalances. Ortho-Bionomy® stimulates the body’s natural self-correcting reflex. As well as self-balancing reflexes by the proprioceptive reflexes and Central Nervous System.
Ortho-Bionomy® is identified as a bodywork modality. It is also a way to approach life. It can help anyone to function more harmoniously within one’s environment. Working with patterns existing within the whole person. Including physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. Anything that affects the physical body has originated in the auric field. This energy moves down through the layers of the auric field. When it reaches the physical body, it triggers a response to feel pain, tension or areas of imbalance.
Ortho-Bionomy® is about listening to the body, not what you are doing to the body. The practitioner facilitates your body’s ability to self-correct. By using positional release, postural re-education and subtle touch and energy work. The structure is designed in a way of always self-correcting. The body is trying to protect itself to function correctly. When the ‘self’ gets out of the way (letting go) that is the biggest part of healing. Old patterns of holding on get in the way of the healing.
Everyone has the capability of healing themselves. By tapping into their own bodies’ self-awareness mechanisms. To be consciously aware of what is happening in their body with the information given. And to be aware of how we interact with that.
Ortho-Bionomy® is very effective in helping alleviate both acute and chronic pain. Stress patterns held in the body, Ortho-Bionomy reduces chronic muscle tension. Also soothing the joints, increasing flexibility, improving circulation, and relaxing the entire body. Using gentle positioning and light touch, Ortho-Bionomy® stimulates inner awareness. This awakens within the individual a sense of natural balance and well-being. This ripple effects physically, emotionally and spiritually. The inner wisdom of the body is recognized and affirmed. Self-healing occurs when the person remembers that their natural ability is to move away from pain toward ease.
Here are some of the principles used in Ortho-Bionomy:-
- Structure governs function
- Finding the preferred position
- Moving away from restriction and toward ease
- Non- attachment to outcome
- Doing less and allowing the body to do more
All these principles can help massage and bodywork practitioners to educate our clients. Providing clients with knowledge about how their bodies work can give them valuable information. They learn what they can do to avoid future stresses or strains. But more importantly, it teaches them how to notice the messages that their bodies are giving them.
The practitioner suggests home exercises. The individual can continue to help the neuromuscular re-education process after the session.
Back in 2002 I completed over 500 hours as a practitioner in Ortho-Bionomy. I love the philosophy and the principles and incorporate it into all the other modalities that I have studied. It is my purpose to empower and educate my clients. By empowering my clients to become more involved in their own healing processes encourages them to take responsibility for what they create.
